How does therapy work?
Being listened to and listening to oneself can be transformative. Many people enter therapy because they recognise that their coping strategies no longer work or are self-destructive. I work together with a client by exploring the thoughts and feelings that underlie their behaviour. We try to understand what is going on in the client’s life now, how this is influenced by the past, and what they want for the future. We explore patterns of experience, body sensations, dreams, and images. As everyone is an individual, each experience of personal therapy will be unique.
Building a trusting relationship where there is an open rapport and connection with my clients is at the heart of my therapeutic work.
At our first session, we will look at your needs and what you will be bringing to therapy (this is an initial view that may get modified as we work together). We will clarify what feels most urgent and where to start our exploration.
I will support you in connecting with the whole of you - body, mind and soul - and in finding language to understand, process, and express your thoughts, feelings, and emotions. This will bring new awareness and a sense of growing in self-knowledge and belief, a healing and releasing of old wounds and patterns that have been carried inside.
Finding deeper meaning in your experience and life, reshaping your identity, and finding self-acceptance and empowerment are all possibilities on the therapy journey.
The work can include elements of coaching and mentoring to support the therapy. For example, working on resourcing in particular situations, looking at parenting needs in relation to children, establishing healthy relationships with a partner, dealing with health issues and struggles.
Individual counselling and psychotherapy sessions are normally weekly and last for 60 minutes. Occasionally, they are 2 weekly.
We will hold regular mini reviews of our work.
