About Me

Mike Rowe

I started working as a counsellor over 30 years ago. I had been teaching self-development that included yoga and meditation since 1987 and often found that people needed to talk with me about various difficulties and complications in their lives. It was a natural step to move into counselling and psychotherapy, as it meant that I was able to offer support to others, and it was also important as part of my own personal growth.

I completed an Advanced Diploma in Counselling and Group Work in 1997, having gained a Certificate 11 years earlier.  I also completed a Certificate in Psychotherapy in 1993 and a Certificate in Supervision in 1998, after which I began to supervise counsellors, psychotherapists, and trainees on different courses in Devon.

I have, over the years, worked with a wide range of people from many different backgrounds. I worked as a counsellor in a community mental health centre, as well as having a private counselling and psychotherapy practice. For 10 years, I worked in the field of supported housing, first as a project manager and then as an area manager.

My therapy work is influenced by person-centred, psychodynamic, core process, mindfulness, and existential models, as well as by my own experience of receiving 5 years of personal therapy. I am also influenced by my practice of yoga and meditation and my interest in eastern spirituality (including non-duality and mindfulness), which began more formally in 1983 after I met Dr Jayadeva Yogendra and spent time in India. In my therapy and in my life, I aim to bring my complete attention and awareness to each moment with an open heart.

I am 62 years old and a parent with 3 adult children. One of my children had a learning disability and passed away several years back.

I bring warmth, genuineness, and honesty to my client relationships.

I also work as a spiritual mentor with people interested in self-development and spiritual growth.
